The biggest winner of the night was A Different Man, a powerful drama about a transgender man navigating the complexities of identity, love, and acceptance. The film, directed by Aaron Schimberg, stars Renate Reinsve and is based on the novel of the same name by Michael Greenberg. A Different Man swept the awards, winning Best Feature, Best Director (Schimberg), and Best Screenplay (Greenberg).
Two other notable films took home multiple awards: Nickel Boys and Sing Sing. Nickel Boys, a historical drama about the horrors of a reform school for black boys in the Jim Crow South, won the awards for Best Documentary and Best Actor for its lead actor, Marcus Henderson.
Sing Sing, a musical drama set in a maximum-security prison, won the awards for Best Ensemble Cast and Best Original Song for its rousing anthem, “I Am Free.” The film, directed by Charles Stone III, features a talented cast that includes Jonathan Majors, Kelvin Harrison Jr., and Cynthia Erivo.
Besides the major awards, there were several other notable winners at the 2024 Gotham Awards. Tár, the critically acclaimed psychological drama about a renowned conductor, won the award for Best Actress for Cate Blanchett’s tour-de-force performance. Everything Everywhere All at Once, the multiverse-spanning action-comedy, won the awards for Best Supporting Actress (Stephanie Hsu) and Best Editing.
Other winners included The Inspection (Best Actor, Jeremy Pope), Women Talking (Best Ensemble Cast), and All That Breathes (Best Documentary). The Gotham Awards also recognized several emerging artists with their Bingham Ray Breakthrough Director Award, which went to Elegance Bratton for The Inspection, and the Gothams Filmmaker Grant, which went to filmmaker Sofia Alaoui for her upcoming film, Animalia.
