COLUMBUS, Ohio – Just when Ohio State thought its depth chart was set, injuries have forced the Buckeyes to shuffle their lineups at midseason.
Leading the list of injured players is right guard Josh Simmons, who suffered a knee injury in last week’s loss to Penn State. Simmons is expected to miss the rest of the season, leaving a big hole on the offensive line.
“Josh is a huge loss for us,” said head coach Ryan Day. “He’s been a rock for us up front, and we’ll miss his leadership and experience.”
Adding to Ohio State’s injury woes is defensive end Will Kacmarek, who suffered an ankle injury in the same game. Kacmarek is also expected to miss an extended period of time.
“Will is a key piece of our defense,” said defensive coordinator Jim Knowles. “He’s a pass rusher who can create chaos in the backfield.”
With Simmons and Kacmarek out, Ohio State has been forced to make some adjustments to its depth chart.
The injuries to Simmons and Kacmarek will undoubtedly have an impact on Ohio State’s play going forward. The Buckeyes will need to find a way to replace their production and maintain their level of play.
“We have a lot of talented players on this team,” said Day. “We’re going to have to step up and fill the void.”
Ohio State will have its first test with its new lineup when it travels to Lincoln, Nebraska to face the Cornhuskers on Saturday.
