The Cougars, who entered the game as 12-point underdogs, caught fire in the second half, outscoring the Jayhawks by a margin of 45-33 to secure the upset victory. Senior guard Alex Barcello led the way for BYU with 24 points, followed by sophomore forward Caleb Lohner with 15 points and 14 rebounds.
“This is a huge win for our program,” said BYU head coach Mark Pope. “We knew we were capable of playing with anybody in this league, and we showed that tonight. I’m so proud of these guys.”
Kansas, which has now lost two of its last three games, was led by junior guard Christian Braun with 19 points. Senior forward David McCormack added 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Jayhawks.
The upset marked BYU’s first win over a top-10 opponent since defeating No. 9 Gonzaga in 2020. It also extended the Cougars’ home winning streak to 14 games.
The victory has major implications for the Big 12 standings, as it moves BYU within two games of Kansas for fourth place. With seven conference games remaining, the Cougars are now in prime position to make a push for the NCAA Tournament.
The upset has been widely hailed as a significant moment for BYU basketball. It is the program’s biggest win in several years and has reignited excitement around the team. The Cougars will look to build on their momentum when they host No. 18 Texas Tech on Tuesday night.
