Former Wolfpack star impresses with breakout season at Winthrop University
After a promising four-year stint at NC State University, forward Kam Woods has found a resurgence at Winthrop University. In his debut season with the Eagles, the 6’7″ standout has already doubled his scoring average from the ACC, showcasing his vast potential in a smaller conference.
Woods, who averaged 7.8 points and 4.9 rebounds as a Wolfpack senior, has blossomed into a dominant force for Winthrop. Through 20 games, he leads the team with 15.4 points and 7.9 rebounds per contest, guiding them to a 13-7 record.
Woods’ scoring prowess has been on full display this season. He has scored in double figures in all but two games, including three performances with 20 points or more. His most impressive outing came in a 79-66 victory over Charleston Southern, where he erupted for a career-high 26 points on an efficient 10-of-13 shooting.
Beyond his scoring, Woods has also made a significant impact on the glass. He has pulled down 10 or more rebounds in four games, including a season-high 14 boards against Longwood University. His rebounding prowess has helped the Eagles control the paint and limit second-chance opportunities for their opponents.
Woods has not only showcased his talent on the court but has also emerged as a leader in the locker room. His experience in the ACC has provided him with invaluable knowledge, which he has used to mentor younger players and instill a winning mindset within the team.
“Kam has been a great addition to our program,” said Winthrop head coach Pat Kelsey. “His leadership and skill have helped us compete at a high level this season. We’re excited to see what he can accomplish in the years to come.”
With a full season remaining at Winthrop, Kam Woods has the opportunity to continue his ascent and etch his name in the annals of college basketball. His exceptional scoring ability, rebounding prowess, and leadership qualities make him a rising star in the sport. As the Eagles pursue a deep postseason run, the former Wolfpack sharpshooter looks poised to double his success once again.
