Trump’s Greenland Ambitions: A Playground Bully Approach?

Former national security adviser John Bolton and President Trump may not agree on many public issues, but one topic that might unite them is the U.S. acquisition of Greenland from Denmark.

Making Greenland an American territory or commonwealth, in Bolton’s view, could help with security interests of “critical importance” to the U.S. and allies in fending off potential threats from adversaries like Russia and China.

Trump fired Bolton in 2019, the same year he first spoke about his ambitions for Greenland. Bolton accused Trump of acting like a “playground bully” in his approach, noting Trump’s refusal to rule out military force to take Greenland.

White House National Security Council spokesperson Brian Hughes defended Trump’s America First Policy, stating that the U.S. has already made significant strides in the Western Hemisphere, including agreements with Mexico, Canada, Panama, Venezuela, and Colombia.

Bolton’s Views on Trump’s Greenland Policy

All Things Considered host Juana Summers spoke to Bolton about his views on Trump’s policy toward Greenland and Denmark.

Bolton suggested that people should stop discussing Greenland publicly and find a mutually acceptable solution, as outrageous statements and playground bully behavior make it harder to achieve a positive outcome.

Making a Case for Greenlandic Citizens

Addressing Greenland’s potential independence, Bolton mentioned arrangements that would give Greenland considerable independence even under U.S. sovereignty, such as becoming a commonwealth like Puerto Rico.

He also mentioned the 1951 Defense of Greenland treaty and expressed hope that Greenland would become a NATO member if it decided on independence.

Trump’s Casino Comment

Bolton criticized Trump’s juvenile comment about putting a casino in Greenland’s capital, emphasizing the gravity of the matter and the potential harm caused by playground-level statements.

U.S. Imperialism Concerns

Bolton disagreed with the notion of a new era of American imperialism, stating that the U.S. is the least imperialist major power in human history and that Trump doesn’t have a coherent strategy.
